Zombie base building games.

Running from zombies is fine. Building somewhere they can't get in is better. These are the zombie survival games where the base is the whole point: the farm that feeds everyone, the walls that hold, the towers that cover the gaps, and the survivors who keep it all running.

Some are big paid games on Steam and console. The first one is free and plays in your browser right now, on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to download.

DeadAcreZ, a free 3D zombie survival base builder: a walled farm settlement as the dead close in

Free · plays in your browser · no download

DeadAcreZ

A homestead at the end of the world. You start with six survivors, a campfire and one wooden pickaxe, in a valley full of the dead. By day you fell trees, sow wheat, raise log houses and send people out on expeditions. At dusk everyone falls back behind the walls, and the night decides whether your planning was any good.

It's a proper base builder: palisades and stone walls, gates, gun towers, spike pits, floodlights, a field hospital, a market, a windmill and more. Every survivor has traits that change how useful they are, the seasons turn and winter bites, and the other settlements in the valley can become allies or trouble. Finish by calling in the rescue Chinook, fixing the truck and leaving in a convoy, or staying put to see how many nights you can last.

What makes a good zombie base builder.

The best ones make you split your attention between two jobs that never stop pulling against each other. The base has to grow, because food, wood, stone and people are what let you build better defences. And the defences have to be ready, because the dead don't wait until you're finished. Get greedy and the walls are too thin. Play too safe and you starve.

The best zombie base building games.

DeadAcreZ is up top because it's ours and it's free. The rest are well-known games that each do base building against the dead in their own way.

DeadAcreZ

Free · web browser on PC, tablet and phone · single player

A 3D farm settlement in a zombie valley. Days for farming and building, nights for holding the walls, with walkers, runners, brutes and worse turning up as the days go on. Easy, Normal and Hard, save slots, and a daily challenge.

Best for: playing a full zombie base builder right now, for free, with nothing to install.

They Are Billions

Paid · PC and console

A steampunk real-time strategy colony builder. You grow a colony across a map crawling with the infected, then hold it against enormous hordes. One gap in the wall can spread through the whole colony in seconds, which is what makes it so tense.

Best for: huge horde sizes and unforgiving, pause-and-plan strategy. See games like They Are Billions.

State of Decay 2

Paid · PC and Xbox · co-op

You lead a community of survivors, each with their own skills and quirks, and turn a run-down site into a working base with beds, a kitchen, an infirmary and gardens. Then you head out to scavenge, claim outposts and deal with the plague hearts spreading the infestation.

Best for: managing survivors as people, with third-person action between base upgrades.

Project Zomboid

Paid · PC · single player and multiplayer

An isometric open-world survival sandbox. Loot houses, board up windows, learn carpentry and farming, and try to make a safehouse last. It's slow, detailed and brutal, and the game tells you up front that this is how you died.

Best for: deep survival simulation where your base is a house you fortified yourself.

7 Days to Die

Paid · PC and console · co-op

Open-world voxel survival and crafting. Scavenge and fortify all week, because by default every seventh night a blood moon horde comes for you wherever you are. Almost every block can be dug out or built with, so bases range from shacks to death-trap fortresses.

Best for: first-person building and horde nights. See games like 7 Days to Die.

Infection Free Zone

Paid · PC

A zombie survival city builder set on real-world maps: pick a real town, maybe your own, then fortify real streets and buildings, send squads out to scavenge and expand your safe zone block by block.

Best for: defending somewhere you actually know.

Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville

Paid · PC

A turn-based zombie city builder. Clear the dead from one block at a time, give each survivor a job, and keep the factions around you on side. The first two Rebuild games started life as free browser games.

Best for: a slower, turn-based take on rebuilding after the outbreak.

Unturned

Free to play · PC (Steam) · multiplayer

Blocky open-world zombie survival on Steam. Scavenge, craft, and build a base with friends on community servers. Simple to look at, with a lot of depth once you get going.

Best for: free multiplayer zombie survival with friends.

Surviving your first nights in DeadAcreZ.

New to DeadAcreZ? The tutorial walks you through it, or you can take the quick tour and figure the rest out. Either way, these will keep the homestead standing past the first few nights.

  1. Get wood coming in first. Mark trees for felling straight away. Almost everything early on costs wood.
  2. Wall in before dark. Press V and click corner by corner to draw a palisade, double-click to finish, then add a gate with G so people can still get out. At dusk everyone falls back to camp, so the first night is about the edge of the light.
  3. Click the dead to aim your guns. When something gets close, click it to send your shooters after it.
  4. Food before it's urgent. Sow a wheat field early. Hens and cattle come later: build the coop or pen, then send an expedition to round the animals up.
  5. Get a gun tower up. It needs wood and stone, and a survivor climbs it when the bell rings. Spike pits and stone walls buy more time as the nights get worse.
  6. Plan for the bad nights. Runners turn up after the first night and brutes a few days in, and a blood moon brings a whole horde against your walls. Upgrade before you need to.
  7. Think about winter. The seasons turn, crops stop growing in winter and the animals give less, and getting through the first winter is a goal of its own. Stock up in autumn.

Zombie base building FAQ.

Yes. DeadAcreZ is a free zombie survival base builder that plays in your browser with no download: build a farm settlement, wall it in and hold it every night. Unturned is free to play on Steam if you want multiplayer.

Can I play a zombie base building game in my browser?

Yes. DeadAcreZ runs in any up-to-date browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android. It's best with a mouse and keyboard, and also plays with touch: drag to move, pinch to zoom.

In plenty of them. DeadAcreZ has wheat fields, orchards, beehives, chicken coops, pig farms and cattle pens. Project Zomboid and State of Decay 2 both have farming too.
