Games like 7 Days to Die.
The best bit of 7 Days to Die is the build-up. A week of scavenging, digging and reinforcing, then a red sky and a horde that tests every block you placed. These games are built around that same loop of preparing and then holding on.

DeadAcreZ
DeadAcreZ swaps the first-person view for a commander's one, but the heart of it is the same: prepare all day, survive all night. You start with six survivors and a campfire. By the time the dead come across the fields you want walls up, a gate, a gun tower manned, and food in store.
The nights escalate. Runners turn up after the first night and brutes a few days in, and when a blood moon rises a whole horde comes at your walls. Between nights there's a lot to do: farming, mining, expeditions to scavenge and recover animals, stripping wrecked cars for scrap, and dealing with the other settlements in the valley. It's free and runs in your browser.
Play DeadAcreZ freeWhy horde nights work.
Horde survival games run on contrast. The quiet hours are about choices: what to build, where to go, what to risk. Then the attack comes and every one of those choices gets tested at once. A good one makes you look at your base the next morning and immediately know what you'd change.
- A clock you can see coming. You know the bad night is on its way, so every hour of prep counts.
- A base you can rebuild better. Walls, traps and towers you place, break and improve.
- Escalation. Tougher and faster zombies as time goes on, so the base that held last week won't hold next week.

Project Zomboid
Isometric open-world zombie survival. Loot, farm, board up a house and try to make it last. There's no single horde night, but the slow build of pressure, and the hordes that drift through, will feel familiar.
Best for: deep survival detail and a safehouse you built up yourself.
State of Decay 2
Lead a community of survivors, build up a base with facilities and outposts, and push back against an infestation that grows if you leave it. Third-person action with a lot of base management between fights.
Best for: managing a whole community, not just yourself.
DayZ
Open-world multiplayer survival where the infected are only half the problem and the other players are the rest. You can build a base, but staying alive comes first.
Best for: tense survival where other players are the biggest threat.
Unturned
Free blocky zombie survival with crafting and base building. Easy to get into, with friends on community servers.
Best for: a free zombie survival game to play with friends.
Bloodmoon Bastion
Our free gothic tower defence game. The dead climb the road to your shrine in a new wave every night, with a boss every fifth night. Build and evolve towers, stack relics and chase the leaderboards.
Best for: pure horde-night defence in short, replayable runs.
Why try DeadAcreZ?
If the part of 7 Days to Die you like most is the base, rather than the looting and gunplay, DeadAcreZ gives you more of it. You're running a whole homestead: fields, livestock, a well, a forge, a hospital, and survivors with traits who need feeding and housing. Defences go from palisades to stone walls, spike pits, floodlights and gun towers. And you can play it on a lunch break, in a browser tab, for free.
